Arístides Esteban (ARES) Hernández Guerrero (Havana, September 2nd, 1963)
Psychiatry graduate. Caricaturist, Illustrator and autodidactic Artist.
He publishes his first caricature in the year 1984. From that moment on, his works have appeared in the main Cuban publications and in many publications around the world.
Ares has participated in many humor events in which he has been awarded more than a hundred prizes. Nowadays, he is the most internationally awarded Cuban caricaturist with the greatest number of international awards in this kind of competitions (62). Among the prizes he has been awarded, there are: the First Prize in the Piauí Humor Exhibition, in Brazil; the First Prize in the Gabrovo Biennale, in Bulgaria; the Yomiuri Prize to Excellency, in Japan; the Grand Prize in the Eduardo Abela Biennale in San
Antonio, Cuba (1997, 2001, 2005); the Eurohumor First Prize, in Italy; the Prize of the Public in Trento, Italy; he has been six times winner of the Prize to the work collection in the National Exhibition of Humor and the winner of the Juan Gualberto Gómez Graphic Journalism Prize in Cuba.
He has published eight books: Entrar por el Aro, Cuba, Cuba com Humor,
Brazil, Gente de Meio-Tom, Brazil, Humor pelo Ares, Brazil, Psicoterapia, una relación de ayuda, Guatemala, Hooz, Iran, Mi Psicólogo soy yo, Cuba and El Norte, el Sur y la Globalización, Italy. Besides, he has illustrated more than thirty more. He has collaborated with in television and in animation films, with eight cartoons based on his caricatures (Filminutos).
Ares has given courses and lectures about graphic humor in Cuba, Iran, Mexico, Colombia, Turkey, Canada and Finland. He has organized several international events on caricatures in Cuba and overseas. He has been a member of the international jury in humor exhibitions in many occasions.
His caricatures are son likewise published in numerous press media in the world.
In the year 1994 he was nominated by the specialized magazine Witty World to appear on a list of the best caricaturists in the world; he was nominated by Cuba to the Quevedos Prize of Ibero-American Caricature; he was included in the Proyecto Memoria as one of the most relevant visual artists of the 20th century in Cuba and included among the twenty most important caricaturists of the past century in Cuba according to the Los Veinte del Siglo XX survey. In the year 2002 ha was awarded the National Culture Distinction by the Ministry of Culture.
